the London housing fire
Had an IM conversation with a friend about the London housing estate fire. Those poor people... Anyway, it went like this.

| the latest figures i heard from the london fire were 30 confirmed dead and 76 still missing and they expect the count to go higher as they continue searching the building. | 12:14 PM |
| also, the cladding that was used in the renovation is apparently suspect. | 12:14 PM |
| and i had heard something about the fire spreading from the outside inward. | 12:14 PM |
| at least i think i heard that; otoh, it was the night it was happening so it could have been a nisstatement (or i could be misremembering...) | 12:15 PM |

| and there was no sprinkler system installed in the "renovation" | 12:17 PM |
| Some one needs to sue the pants off the guy who did the reno | 12:18 PM |
| and then call Mike and ask him to rebuild the building | 12:18 PM |

| they wouldn't spend the money on that--public housing, remember? | |

| Maybe he'd do it pro bono to show how public housing should be built. | 12:22 PM | ||
| R | |||
| yeah | 12:22 PM | ||
| but it will be years before it works its way through the various courts and councils | 12:22 PM | ||
| you do realize that if Mike did that, there'd be people of all income brackets fighting to get in | 12:27 PM | ||
| Me | |||
| Not if it were specifically public housing | 12:29 PM | ||
| "Sorry, bud, you ain't poor enough to live here." | 12:29 PM | ||
| R | |||
| yep | 12:29 PM | ||

| take your wealthy self off and buy something in your price range. | 12:29 PM | ||
| It should be possible, with the right contractors and the right planning to build simple, sturdy, public housing. Concrete and steel for the frame, brick for the facade, foam insulation that's fire-resistant, sprinkle system at least in the hallways, plain but sturdy bathroom fixtures, plain but sturdy kitchen facilities | 12:35 PM | ||
| I don't know. I'm no architect nor contractor. But it seems to me it's more cost effective to have solid, a step or two above minimum code, and using fire-resistant materials. than having to bury thousands of people and tear down and rebuild a housing estate, R
